Visiting a child support program, 25th December 2021 to 6th January 2022
Hello friends! Welcome to the support, encouragement & prayer group for Rosalie and David. We are planning to start our journey on Dec 25th and to come back on Jan 7th.
Although this Spur Afrika Kenya Trip (25th December 2021 to 6th January 2022) has been planned - in one form or another - for a while, the finalization of detail has been something of a ‘surprise’.
Thanks for lunch at Laksa Garden!! Trying to eat all the yummy things in Melbourne before we leave. Praying that everything will go smoothly - most pressing is the covid test before the flights and packing!
While passing through Melbourne’s Chinatown on Friday, some ‘Season Greet
It was packing night. Praying we can take as much as we can. Shout out to Grace for her amazing & awesome packing skills. Thanks for helping us pack over 90kg worth of donated goodies.
When first visiting the Kibera (Nairobi) informal settlement in 2016 with the Spur Afrika team, I noticed, together with Dr Victor Hui, that “no wonder so many kids complain about sore eyes, our eyes are hurting too!
Flight is tomorrow night 10:55pm 🙂 Please pray: I waited about 1.5 hours for my COVID test yesterday morning BUT my covid test results still haven’t come back yet (hopefully soon) but David Fong’s result is negative (yay!
Update!! What a stressful day!! Covid results didn’t come back so I decided to go to the airport to get a rapid PCR test. Sorry to my family as I skipped most of Christmas lunch.
It’s boarding time! We nearly had all the correct paperwork. There was a stack of paperwork they asked us for. I had to do a Kenyan surveillance form on the spot, but the flight attendant was happy to help.
Hello from Doha!! Flight from Melbourne was pretty smooth. Thanks for all the prayers & birthday messages. I am currently enjoying some cake and watching the planes take off.
Proof of life photo!! We made it safely to Kenya!! There was some waiting & disorganisation checking our documents when we got to Kenya but we managed to get through quickly.
The sign of the times - RAPID TESTING - NEGATIVE results! YAY~ We decided to test ourselves for some peace of mind. We nearly had the tests taken away at customs (because of tax reasons), however praise God we managed to talk our way through.
Dec 29th - All the Spur sponsored children and their families were invited for a health check. 🙂 😝 WHAT A DAY!! I feel very much exhausted, I forgot how hard it is to run a health clinic.
Today we had the opportunity and honour to visit some households in the Kibera informal settlement (slum) of Nairobi. It was good to see some of the recent improvements in infrastructure in Kibera, such as the sealing and widening of internal roads.
Day 1 - Holo, Kisumu. - Happy New Year EVE! We are finally here! With a early start and about 2 hours of travel from Nairobi, we landed at Kisumu.
Holo Day 2 - Happy New Year 2022! It’s what we have been waiting for, to meet the community & the children of Holo. 🤩 As we entered the area we are borrowing, the children and parents welcomed us with song and dance!
Today we visited six of the supported children at Holo, Kisumu, Kenya. As in the previous two days, it was a pleasure to be welcomed to the homes of the families of the supported children.
Today we visited Ochok Kodongo Primary School, in Holo (near Kisumu, Western Kenya). Ochok Kodongo teaches students from pre-school to Year 8. Ochok Kodongo has about 900 students in total.
TRAVEL DAY 😆 We are very grateful to be able to travel to Kisumu. It is bitter sweet to leave Kisumu. Today Sue, David and I flew back to Kibera, while Patoh and Andrew drove the car back.
LAST DAY OF KENYA 🥲😭 We spent the morning training our Kenyan team. David spoke about monitoring and evaluation, in which the team did some quizzes on the phone.
Hello from Doha!! 👋🖐 We had a little hassle getting checked in at Kenya as we went to the wrong terminal, however after some assistance from Patoh and Sue, we got to the right place.
Today, January 6th - Feast of the Epiphany, we departed Kenya. Now at Doha (Qatar) airport, we are waiting for a flight to Melbourne. Traditionally, the Feast of Epiphany is when the Magi (Wise Men from the East) came to visit and adore the infant Jesus.
Touch down!! We are back in Melbourne safely!! 😁😆 Thank you for your support, encouragement and prayers. God is great! It was very fast getting out of the airport, they didn’t check any of our COVID documents.
