{trying to photograph cars, or even dogs}...the camera needs to be *pre-focussed* on an area which would (tend to) be perpendicular to you and the camera. You begin taking pics as the subject is to your side, swinging the camera as the subject goes by. The big problem is that you cannot follow the motion through the camera -- it takes too much time to process each image. So, you have to develop a rhythm-timing of your camera swinging with the speed of the object. If you do this right, the object will be in focus, and the background blurred. It takes a little planning and a little luck to get the object in the right place at the right time at that right speed of panning.
